Flash Photography 101

A great email was sent out to the Minneapolis Photographic Society (mplsphoto.com), of which I am member. The email was for a Flickr user group that is based off of the blog Strobist.com. The site is for photographers looking to use off-camera flash with their new digital SLR. On this site they have a great tutorial on setting up a flash.

From the blog a Flickr group has kicked off with several meet-ups in various parts of the country. There is one happening in the Twin Cities in the next couple of weeks. If you interested and a member of Flickr, look for the Strobist group and the Minneapolis thread.

Ireland Leading the Green Bag Movement

Check out this story from the New York Times (you may have to register).

I have to be honest. I haven’t made the move to cloth or reusable bags and sadly it may take a bag tax like the one set in the Irish republic.

I found this story via C|Net.

Flickr has created something called The Commons, where users can help the Library of Congress tag public domain photos in their archives.

(I’m back, I’m hoping to put some house searching info up soon, so stay tuned.)

The Numbers are Amazing

Some time you know this stuff. I’ve seen Moore’s Law first hand, we all have. But thinking of the rule expanding to information and putting it in context is amazing. It is one thing to know and another thing to see what the changes really mean.

Watch it!

Thanks to Nic McPhee for pointing to it. Here is another talk on a similar subject.

New Game

Portal – It is a part of the new Half-Life 2 Orange Box, containing Episode 2. The game is a updated version of puzzle/adventure game from students at Digi-Pen. It looks like it it a lot of fun and the reviews have been excellent. This review of Orange Box is hilarious and includes Portal at the end:

Always Learning

I was watching some more of the talks from TED, a conference for a 1000 leaders across the world in industry, politics, design, etc. The video I embedded is a talk by a guy who was on the Seattle Public Library design team. It is a really great discussion about design and looking at the real data that should drive the project. And how extremely logical design can be used to create interesting and useful buildings.

Here is a random piece of history that I picked up in Slate today: A Brief History of the Toothpick. I know what you’re thinking, why would I ever want to know the history of the toothpick? I would counter, you never know when the you’ll need to know the history of the toothpick, so why not learn it now and be prepared. I would encourage you to watch other talks if you can,

Finish with not-so-new news, Apple’s OS X is still better than Microsoft’s Windows, even after Vista was released. Slate has an article to lay out all the reasons. And now that the new OS is out, I’m electronic year-end bonus deposit away from ordering it. Check out the story, and head over to your local Apple store.

After a long haitus….

I’m back after some changes from my host that broke my settings in Blogger. But I’m back now. I’ve dome some photo work since I was on vacation. Matt and I did some “studio” work, trying to capture droplets. Matt did some interesting things with matches as well.

I also did a day trip to MN bluff country to get some photos of the fall colors. I started late so many of my pictures are back lit and it isn’t so good. But check them out on Flickr and let me know what you think and how I should improve the photos.

And an Update
My photo from the Como Park Conservatory was picked up for the on-line travel guide. YEAH!
